The student project "Biodviersiy in Wittental" (German: Exploratorium Lebendiges Wittental) has set itself the goal of preserving and promoting biodiversity on the grounds of the Chair of Forest Entomology and Forest Conservation.
The transformation of the originally park-like grounds by relatively simple measures (changed mowing regime of flowering meadows, ponds, stone walls, dead wood, nesting aids, etc.) quickly showed success. Whether nesting mounds, ponds or spring water basins - within a very short time, the small biotopes that had been created were enlivened and a visible increase in species diversity could be observed.
The project is supported primarily by the commitment of students, who identify, design and maintain potential suitable habitats on the site. This creates a place of learning and experimentation where they can experience contact with biodiversity and gain hands-on experience of nature. In the self-managed student laboratory, students can implement their own project ideas seven days a week, expand their knowledge of species and conduct their own studies.
Now, project leader Ottmar Fischer and the student coordinators Kristina Schweißgut and Sarah von Adelmannsfelden were able to accept the 1st place award of the Nature Conservation Prize of the City of Freiburg 2023. With the Nature Conservation Award, the city recognizes exceptional commitment in the field of species and nature conservation.
